I cornered the ortho surgeon/ sports medicine guy at work first thing this morning and said "Hey YOU, come here and look at my knee. Tell me what the heck is wrong with it...NOW" Or maybe it was something more like "Dr. Schmidt? Would you mind if I bugged you about my knee for a minute?" Either way he agreed to look at my knee.
I explained how I had been out running and noticed it felt weird on the top of the tibia anteriorly. (that is a word right? cuz my spell checker is not accepting it?) but it didn't hurt so I kept running and pretty soon forgot about it, until several hours later when my knee became very swollen and I could no longer walk without limping. The swelling had subsided, I can now bend my knee normally again, but it hurts to go down stairs. So I did some deep knee squats for him to demonstrate my full range of motion with no pain. He manipulated my knees to compare them, moved my patella around. Good news all ligaments are intact! Tendons are intact! Yay.
Bad news, he wasn't really sure what the problem was. He prescribed a strong anti-inflammatory and is going to look at my knee again Wednesday. There will also be another sport medicine guy there Wednesday so I can get a second opinion. (Good thing I have worked with these boys for 10 years and they are happy to look at my knee! There has to be some perks to the job!)
He also said that at this point he didn't see why I shouldn't be able to run the half marathon this weekend if it continues to resolve and feels better by Friday. I am not sure it will be better and I have already decided to not run if there is even a hint of this funny business going on by Friday. I just don't think it would be worth ruining my whole fall running schedule. He didn't rule out stress fracture, he just didn't think it was likely given the location and that I haven't ramped up on my training any lately. So I am hoping it heals fast and I can move on. Possibly bursitis? He gave me a prescription for an anti-inflammatory and told me to RICE for a couple more days before I test it out.
More good news, since I work with him I don't have to pay the copay or wait for an office visit appointment. I don't know if I could handle waiting anyway. Free Dr. advice YAY! Although it would feel a little better if we knew what was going on so I knew what to do. Anyway, just a little update! Thanks for reading :)
Kristi at Half Virgin sent me this quote.
God, grant me the serenity to accept when I cannot run; the courage to run when I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
I LOVE IT. Thank you Kristi, you are awesome even if you spell your name COMPLETELY wrong. The right way of course being Christy. Just kidding, you probably think I spell mine wrong :) I always tell people Christy with a C and a Y. It doesn't look like me otherwise on paper. Does anyone else feel this way when you see your name spelled wrong? Also, Kristi, just so you know my spell checker is accepting your name but not mine. What is up with that? Maybe I do spell my name wrong. HA!
Can anyone guess where I am in this picture? It was taken 6 years ago. When I had been dating my husband for two months and my sis had just met her future husband. She and I jetted off on a fabulous 10 tour of Italia. Love the place. I hope I can get back there someday.
Oh NOO! I hope your knee heals fast. What a frustrating thing to get in the middle of running season. The quote is perfect. It really says what we all should follow. But then again, most of us think we are super human and go on to bust our selves even more before deciding to stop after its too late. I know that firsthand :(
ReplyDeleteHope you get better soon!
I would love some free medical advice! I'm obviously not paling around with the right people!
ReplyDeleteKeep riceing and hopefully by the time of the half you'll be as good as new.
Hope your knee heals quickly and you can give your race a shot. Yeah for free Dr. advice!
ReplyDeleteWow.. Talk about having the hook ups!
ReplyDeleteugh, niggling pains that crop up and not knowing 'wat the deal is' is THE worst! you hope it's nothing but then freak yourself out sometimes jumping to worst case scenarios. the GOOD news is that u are able to have nearly instant access to a doc and also that u're being smart and not going to try to risk the long term goals for the short term ones. finally, try not to stress too much because at least for me, often times these little sores and inflammation things crop up but after some IB and rest/backing off they go away just as mysteriously as they came about! sending big healing thoughts ur way! :)
ReplyDeleteAFter having 5 sfx myself.. If you can't hop on that leg(like one legged hop) than that's not good. Also if when you run you have to alter your gait.. another no go. I hope it all works out.. RICE up!
ReplyDeleteHope the knee feels better! Speedy recovery thoughts your way!
ReplyDeleteHope the anti-inflamatory works for you and things get back to normal soon.
ReplyDeleteNice pic of you and your sister!
I love that you can get quick, free doc advice! I would think that you could run the half if you didn't go balls to the wall (which might be hard since it is a race), but I'm guessing you already paid for it, so you might as well go and at least treat it like a very well supported training run. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is seriously awesome that you can get free GOOD dr. advice easily. I'm jealous. I hope he's right and it's not a big deal and you can still run this weekend!
ReplyDeleteGotta love free md evals! Yet another downside to me working home health! Hope you're knee feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteMy fingers are crossed for you. Hopefully the taper takes care of the weirdness and you're able to run on the weekend.
ReplyDeleteIs there a shorter race to drop down to? Great quote. So important to be respectful of your body.
ReplyDeleteI hope your knee continues to feel okay! And, I hope nothing is seriously wrong with it - maybe it was just overworked?
ReplyDeleteHave a great week and thank you for the quote!! I needed that. :)
So glad you were able to get at least a little bit of an idea of what is going on with your knee! At least you know it's nothing HUGE. I think I would take that as a win! Hope it gets feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteSo Sorry about the knee...
ReplyDeleteSO LOVE the quote!!!!
Get better SOON!
It's great that you have access to medical care and that your knee is improving. I hope you continue to see progress!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Florence to me. I was there in 2007 and last summer on my honeymoon! :)
Bummer to hear about your knee. Though that is awesome that you get free exams and advice from the sports doctors where you work, that would be amazing!
ReplyDeleteI definitely would make sure that your knee feels 100% before doing the half marathon. Your attitude of not running unless it seems like its fully normal seems good to me. You don't want to jeopardize your fall running schedule.
Caitlin and Tri-Living Together both have good advice, if you can't put pressure on it that is not a good sign. Hopefully it is not a stress fracture - not sure if they will recommend a x-ray or MRI to fully determine what it is if the anti inflammatories don't work.
And your quote is right on.
Sounds like a great tour of Italy, that is where I want to go next if possible!
Love that quote! And I think the news is more good than bad. So I am crossing my fingers you will get to run Saturday.
ReplyDeleteOh NO!! Sorry about you knee. That is the worst to have pain in your body right before you have a big race coming up. I agree. Don't run if it is still bothering you. I hope that it will feet better for you over night and you will be able to run on Saturday. Good Luck!!
ReplyDeleteI love that quote.
Hummm I have been to Italia....
ReplyDeletethis does not look familiar...near water...this is not Venizia, Napoli maybe?
Ah, connections! That doc is a good one for a runner to have. I hope you can run your half, just so I can run (virtually) behind you and get some speed by osmosis. But don't do it if it will wreck the fall.
ReplyDeleteGood luck on your knee healing quickly. I hope you can run the race!!
ReplyDeleteI HATE when my name is spelled wrong. It's RACHEL no extra e's or a's needed. Rachael or Racheal or however else you can spell it annoys me, so I know how you feel! I always tell people to spell Rachel - the simple way. :)
I hope your knee continues to heal! So sorry about it bothering you, what a major bummer.
ReplyDeleteI love asking around work for free medical advice, because that is how I figured out that I had my stress fracture in my pelvis last year!
Ah! Get better! I hope the NSAIDS help and a little rest...You are being smart to consider backing out, but i hope it's all better by race day. :)
ReplyDeleteHi from a new reader and now follower. Yay for the good news! "Not sure what the problem is" can be so frustrating. Hope all is better soon. And love the quote! I'm sharing it with a friend :)

I hope your knee feels better and you can run the 1/2 this weekend! I don't mind so much if people spell Katie with a 'y' instead of the 'ie', but I get annoyed when people don't believe that is my name. I am always asked if I am Catherine or told I need your 'full, legal name'. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad the quote was good for you. There are so many ways to spell our name that I don't care how people spell it anymore. When people ask (and it's for something that doesn't matter like a wait list at a restaurant) I just tell them "however you want to!". At least pronunciation isn't an issue. That might drive me nuts.
ReplyDeleteTHAT is an awewome quote!!!!! I'm going to type it up all fancy, print it, and hang it in our coat closet. That's where we keep the running gear. I love it. :)
