Happy Monday! It is off to work for me today and hopefully I can get the ortho surgeon/ sports medicine doctor that will be at work today cornered so he can look at my knee. It is feeling much better this morning after having babied it all weekend. The swelling is nearly gone and it can bend all the way again. YAY! I just don't know if I will be able to do the half marathon this weekend. I really want to, well you know how it is, but I really don't want to make is worse and have to miss out on more races this fall. I am signed up for quite a few in August and September. Some of those races are favorites. I am going to just keep babying my knee and hope for the best! When I got home Saturday and my knee was really swollen and I was limping around, my kids had fallen asleep in the car on the way home, so I let them sleep in the car for awhile longer while I had a good cry over my knee and my half marathon dreams for this weekend that were going down the drain. It was brief, but I did feel a little better afterwards. I just feel so bummed out. I had been thinking of taking it up to a full marathon in September, which would be my first. I saw that flying out the window too. But now that it feels better I am feeling a little more optimistic. Fingers crossed!
The very thought of having to take very much time off running is depressing :( but I know this too shall pass. There is always a light at the end of the tunnel and all things happen for a reason! Right?
I feel a little like a slug and I really so far have only missed one day of running.
On a bright note I won a Calorie Counter book over at Just Me and My Running Shoes, thanks Karen! If you haven't checked out her blog you should, it is a fun read.
Tell me something to cheer me up! Anyone have any stories of injury that healed fast? :)
Do you think that 9 weeks is enough to go for a full marathon if my long run right now is at 14 miles or is it too much of a stretch?
Oh yeah and if you haven't entered yet I have a Handful bra giveaway going on HERE Best. Bra. Ever!
9 weeks is plenty of time if you're already at 14 miles.
ReplyDeleteI had a really painful ankle thing that turned out to be a shoe issue, so maybe your knee thing can be solved by new 100 dollar shoes? We can dream! :)
Hope the knee is ok! Definitely play it safe though :).
ReplyDeleteI don't have any good healing stories...though I did run 12 miles three days after donating blood with no problem!
I hope the knee heels quickly! Keep babying it.
ReplyDeleteAssuming your injury heals, I definitely think you could do a marathon in 9 weeks if you're up to a 14 mile long run now. I am 12 weeks away from a marathon and my training program doesn't call for a 15 miler for another three weeks.
Okay.... This is coming from a girl who had to take 6 weeks off (no running at all) prior to the Boston Marathon. My training was so so before the injury, and all I could do was spinning after the injury. Went to the ortho, he told me to not try to run at all until there was ZERO pain upon walking a mile. Long story short, I never had swelling/bruising, and it took the full 6 weeks to heal (must have been either IT or tendonitis). Don't risk further injury, and I wouldn't do the half. I know it stinks, but, in the long run, you'll keep from risking a worse injury! That being said, Play the marathon by ear... I know a girl who walked the whole Boston marathon due to an injury that happened right before. Now, she's back, as fast as ever and injury free!! :) Wishing you a very speedy recovery. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteAs long as you get at least one 20 mile run in three weeks before the race date and then taper, you should be just fine. I would add miles to your long run for the next three weeks and then do the 20 three weeks out from the full and then taper. You can totally do it!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry about the knee and am hoping hoping it is something minor that will be feeling great again in another day or two. Lots of injuries are minor and heal very quickly, and since it is only Monday I would not give up on your half yet. :) I hope you get good news today from the doc.
I just found your blog through Karen's. I understand about the knee pain! I have had to take quite a quite a while off b/c of my knee. I got my othopedic surgeon brother to look at it and he told me it was Plica! Not at all fun to deal with! I hope your knee heals quickly so you can run all of your races!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the knee. Definitely hit up that ortho doc if you get a chance and get his opinion.
ReplyDeleteAs far as the marathon training goes I say that absolutely 9 weeks is plenty of time for you. Build up your LR by 1 mile each week and you will be ready for sure.
I am thinking about you!
It WILL get better! I promise! I think that you are headed in the right direction, and playing it safe. Definitely a good plan. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't remember where I saw this but I wrote it in my planner because I knew I'd need it one day...
ReplyDeleteGod, grant me the serenity to accept when I cannot run; the courage to run when I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
I hope your knee continues to improve!
I hope you are able to get some answers. Having worked in Sports Medicine for 13 years I can tell you that the knee can be tricky. My rule of thumb with my athletes is that swelling and pain are your body's way of getting your attention. You need to know what you are dealing with before you decide if you can just push through. Wishing you the best.
ReplyDeleteChristy, I'm so sorry about your knee. I know it's sad, but you're doing the right thing bagging the half this weekend. You won't regret it.
ReplyDeleteI think you could totally run a marathon in September. My longest run so far in my training program for Top of Utah is only 14 miles, too, and I'm nowhere near as fast/fit as you are. As long as your knee is good to go, I know you can be too. (And you should think about Top of Utah. I'm doing it with Erin at See Mom Run Far. It would be great to meet you too!)
Wow that sunset is gorgous, with the sun peaking out through the clouds :)
