Yesterday I did an interval workout with 6X 800s and then 4x 400s with a mile warm up and cooldown. It felt pretty good although by the end I was pretty tired. I never really understand why I struggle so much to pull off the prescribed pace in training but then when I get to a race I can really pull out the stops. I am guessing it has to do with race day adrenaline and the extra motivation of all the other runners. I always train by myself so there really isn't anyone to push me harder.
Mostly I am not going to question it too much whatever I am doing seems to be working all right for me. Anyone else feel like this? I see some people posting about their great tempo runs and am so jealous. I do tempo runs but never as fast as I am supposed to, but then I go race and pull off a time I shouldn't have according to my training. Not like out of this world fast but faster than the pace I have been training for. Most weeks I really don't even do a real tempo run.
There I said it. I confess, most weeks I skip my tempo runs. I go out meaning to do them, but then I never quite manage to maintain the pace so I scale back. I get the pace I am supposed to run from the pace calculators on Runners World. so it isn't like I am aiming too big. Maybe it is all the hills I have to deal with. Maybe it is all mental, but I really hate tempo runs.
Nothing much exciting to post today. I did make some out of this world stuffed mushrooms and zucchini boats this week. I was pretty impressed with myself. I HATE cooking and so does my husband so it just falls to me to cook. I usually keep it pretty basic. Don't worry this will not be turning into a food blog and I would share the recipe but not really sure what I did with it. I found it on Allrecipes.com What an awesome resource. Plug in some ingredients and it spits out some recipe ideas. All kinds of suggestions about ways to make it better. Anyone else love this site?
Funny the mushrooms don't look as good here as they did in real life. They were a little too good really. There were none left.
I just noticed that I passed the 100 post mark. Yay
Do you like cooking or is it just another chore for you like it is for me?
It seems I never hit my training paces either. Once I get in a race though the adrenaline starts to pick up and my time is surpass what I had expected. I'm suppose to have a tempo run every week but I always hold back and it just never turn out as planned. lol
ReplyDeleteI should do tempo runs, but I really dont like them. I have only done a few and they s**ked. I just want to enjoy running not kill myself over it.
ReplyDeleteYou are doing awesome on your race girl. Tempo run or no tempo run. Just keep doing what you are doing.
Cooking is a chore for me. I have to struggle not to give in to the take-out temptation, especially when my husband is working late. When it's just me and the kids, I often spread PB on tortillas for all of us, nuke some frozen veggies, put a strainer of grapes on the table and call it good.
ReplyDeleteOn the tempo runs...if your races are rockin', I wouldn't worry about it (and your races DO rock).
I love mushrooms!! I honestly love to cook, but some days I can't muster up the energy to do anything spectacular. If it's food, and it fills me up, I'm satisfied whether it's Ramen, or a 5 star meal. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't even bother with the training calculators. I just do whatever feels right- push myself hard one day, take it easy the next. Etc. Seems to be working.
ReplyDeleteThose shrooms look great!
Those shrooms look yum! Send some my way!!
ReplyDeleteThose shrooms look awesome to me!
ReplyDeleteI think it's normal to be tired when doing speedwork during training and not so much during racing. Actually, that's the way it should be! Train tired then rest up for race day so that you're ready to hit it.
Well, you know I loooove to cook.
ReplyDeleteZuke boats are so much fun.... love them.
I am always so impressed by the way you find speed and motivation when you race.
I have an impossible time hitting my paces for speedwork out and if I do hit them I feel like death! I think whatever you are doing is working and honestly saving yourself for races is smart. Don't waste all your energy in training right?
ReplyDeleteTempo runs are the death of me and I hate them and can hit the paces in about 1 in 4. Intervals don't bother me so much and I can get close to the paces if not just nail them -- so not sure about what causes that.
ReplyDeleteNot much of a cook here...very much a chore.
I'm with you, love the track, hate the tempo!
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't like mushrooms, but I won't hold that against you.
I wish I was more like you - I'm kinda backwards. I seem to train a lot better than I race. I run certain times during training and then think, "wow, the next race should be awesome", but then I seem a little slower on race day than I want. Some of my PR's are during training, which doesn't seem right.
ReplyDeleteyum! that meal sounds delicious! i really love cooking...i find it really relaxing but i enjoy it more on the weekend when i have more time. during the weeks i just feel tired and annoyed by it.
ReplyDeletei really agree with you about the tempos. any time i have tried a tempo...it has been on the TM. When ever I am outside I just kinda go into...I want this to be a relaxing/enjoy the scenery run. haha!
when this showed up in my feed- the smaller version of the picture led me to think these were cookies! even though they aren't, they do look delicious!
ReplyDeleteI've never really done a tempo run during training, sometimes I do them by accident I think though - start off slow, and then just steadily pick it up near the end of the run. So I wouldn't worry about you not doing tempo runs, seems like you do speed work, which is almost the same theory as tempo runs to me. (basically a faster pace training run)
ReplyDeleteI think race day adrenaline has a lot to do with achieving your goals on race day, your body can do a lot of things when the adrenaline kicks in, and pushes through the pain.
cooking is usually a chore, baking however is fun for me
ReplyDeleteI usually think I'm going to have a heart attack and die when I'm doing track repeats or tempo runs. Only runs that aren't TOO bad are the LSD ones :D
ReplyDeleteTrack workouts seem easier for me than tempos since I feel like I have more control over them. And I love mushrooms! Too bad I don't like cooking.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to the track & most of mt meals come from allrecipes.com! I can tempo on occasion but it's usually just me out there running at whatever pace fits the run. I find the track intimidating.
ReplyDeletei have never even attempted to do a tempo run, and your race times are great since you are smashing PRs so I think you are totally okay with what you are doing! if you werent making progress than maybe but whatevs!
ReplyDeletei LOVE mushrooms!
I love mushrooms as well, I love that you didn't even recall what you did and I LOVE allrecipes.com it's amazing! I find so many of the recipes I attempt there :D I also train alone, though I should be doing more of it. Yesterday I did 2.5miles in 25 mins. My goal race time for my first ever 5k is 30mins so I think I can do it :D YAY!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI usually hate cooking. I love really simple foods like cereal, sandwiches, and salads! I do go into cooking frenzies sometimes though where I will cook for a whole day but then I'll go on strike for like a month!
ReplyDeleteI love allrecipes.com! Great website!! :0) I love to cook as well! :0)
ReplyDeleteI want those mushrooms IN. MY. BELLY. Yum :-)
ReplyDeleteI think you're right that your adrenaline kicks in when you toe the line and you can pull out faster times that seemed possible in training runs. In college I noticed that sometimes girls would kill workouts, but them bomb races and some girls wouldn't look so impressive at practice, but could go be top 10 at nationals... Part of that is just that running is so mental and another part is that I think a lot of people good too hard in their training and fatigue their muscles to the point that they can't recover by race day... I'd say just keep doing what you're doing. Race day is the only one that really counts when it comes to times and speed.
ReplyDeletei totally agree, on race day I seem to just hit a pace that I normally would struggle with.. has to be my competitive streak coming out
ReplyDeleteSad i missed this giveaway boo...i like when the hubby cooks, is that a bad answer?
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 100-mark!
ReplyDeleteLove allrecipes.com. :) I love the comments by other people too. Love stuffed mushrooms...
And I love to cook!
And eat....
I used the virtual partner function on my Garmin when I was running by myself. I found that it helped but on race day I am much faster. I usually focus on people to pick off and you can't really do that on your own. ;)
ReplyDeleteCooking is a chore for me. I don't have any kids yet so that may change as time goes on. My husband loves to cook but today I am actually cooking spaghetti! :)
Some days I love cooking... while on the crazy, busy days I hate it!!
ReplyDeleteJust happened upon your blog and glad I did. I am learning to run and plan on running a 10K this year :P I can use the motivation from your site.
Make it a great day!
