Only 12 days to go! :)

I am starting to get so excited for my next race next weekend.  The Governor's Cup Half Marathon!  My goal for it is to run it with a sub 1:40 time.  I am fairly confident that I can do this for several reasons 1. I ran a 1:40:56  in the heat on a hilly course in July and felt awesome.  2. It will be cooler for this race and it is a flat with some downhill and only one slight incline.  At the same time I am a little worried about hitting my goal because 1. What if I have an off day where I can't seem to find my breathing and rhythm 2. I don't feel like my training has been as consistent due to weather, and life happening.  3. I am human.

All the same I am very excited.  I haven't entirely ruled out a 5k this Saturday.  I haven't done one in a while and I really love the distance.  It is a flat course and would feel good to just stretch the legs out and fly.   I would love to get a PR in the 5k before racing season in Montana shuts down for the winter (big big sad face here)  I am for sure going to do a 5k the weekend AFTER the half marathon.  I did that last year and nearly PRd on a super hilly course and felt fabulous.  I am just having a really hard time passing up the race this weekend knowing racing season is coming to an end and I love racing so much.

Any sage words of wisdom here?  Would I be ruining my half marathon if I kick it in for a 5k Saturday?  The half marathon isn't until the next Sunday so I would have 7 whole days in between to recover.  The half does take priority and no I would not be able to take it easy on the 5k.  I just couldn't.  I am too competitive like that  :)

  1. I've got no advice on the race scheduling. Personally, I think you're a rockstar and can do any and all races and still smile. So, I'd say go for it. Good luck with your time goal for the half. I know you'll do great. Ignore the 'what if's' - you can do it!

  2. I don't think that I would be able to run a 5k and 1/2 marathon that close together because my legs take forever to recover after a race. You know your body better then anyone else, so if your legs recover that quick I say do it girl!

I think that sub 1:40 is in the bag for you! Don't think of the reasons that you can't do it, think of he reasons you can! You have been working hard all summer and are in surpurb shape, a sub 1:40 is well within your ability. Can't wait to see how you do!

  3. I think you'll be fine to do a 5K before the half. That might actually help since you can "set" your speed to super fast. I find that I pace faster for a week or two after a sprinting type race like a 5K.

  4. I think it would be fun to do the 5k and like Kara said, it will set your body on 'speed mode' for the half. As long as you normally recover ok after a 5k I say go for it. I love racing too and would do a race every weekend if I could afford it. :)

Good luck on the sub 1:40 half. You are super speedy!

  5. I think you should do both. but what do I know. lol ...nothing. although I think that you are in a class where 3.1miles is an "easy run" for you. So why not give it your all and then if need be take the whole week off prior to your half.

Also, about your worries /w the half. I think you should just remember how much you love running and go /w it. Who cares if you don't PR you are still doing more than I could and I think you are great!

  7. I say go for it! It's not a huge distance for you and I have a feeling that it will be a good primer for the next week. I'm a race addict and if I was rich would probably race every week. Get them in while you still can!

  8. DO IT! It's just a 5K and I think you will be fine! You are superwoman and I think you have plenty of time for your legs to recover!

  9. I think it's pretty obvious that you are in killer running shape so you should have no problem racing a 5K the week before a half marathon...just take your mid week runs nice and slow and maybe take a couple rest days before your half...you'll do awesome! Can't wait to read all the recaps!

  10. Do both! Just depends on your recovery between hard efforts. I can run hard and the next day feel
Completely fresh. (maybe I didn't run hard enough?)

You are in excellent shape and should take advantage of the remainder of the big sky racing season :) can't wait to hear how they go!

  11. Go for the 5k girl, why not? I feel the same as you. We gotta take advantage of the racing season. A week is plenty of time to recover for the half distance and it would probably be a great final speedworkout. I say go for it!!

  12. sub 1:40- AWESOME! I'm still trying to break into the 1:40s. A whole weeks rest from a 5k is plenty of time :)

  14. I would be fine to race a 5K 7 days before a half and I bet you would be too, but you know your body best. I think you are in a great position to get sub 1:40. Yay! :)

  15. I think you'd be fine to do the 5K the Saturday before. It'll be alright! I do odds and ends like that too! I'll bet you'll have a great race, especially now that things are cooler! That always helps!

  24. Christie, I TOTALLY think the sub 1:40 is in the bag for you!!! and I think the 5K is okay as long as you do a good taper during those 7 days AND run SLOW and easy!!! go get it Girl!!

  25. GL next weekend!!! I can't wait to read about how the race goes.

  26. You go girl! I know you can rock that half! I think doing a 5k the weekend before would be a great idea to just shake things out. Good luck girl!

  27. I think you could do both, not sure if you want to race the 5K completely all out, because if you do you probably want to almost taper the whole week in preparation for the half marathon.

I think you definitely will get better than 1:40, I could see you getting something like 1:37 to 1:38 or maybe even better than that...good luck!
