End of the Year Eww

I kept telling myself that I would be starting speed work up again in January in the new year but then I saw a magazine cover that had "New Year New You" on it and I thought that was lame.  Why do people have to wait for the new year to have a new them.  What if you don't want a new you?  What if you are happy the way you are.  So on that note I decided to start today.

The windiest day of the year.

Okay it wasn't really the windiest but it was really freaking windy!  I did a two mile warmup with the first mile going INTO the wind and the second mile was cross ways with the wind so it wasn't as bad.

I did 8 x 400 meter intervals.  The first three felt really rough.  It may or may not have had anything to do with the hills.  I like to think it did.  The 4th and 5th were feeling better and the 6th and 7th felt great like my legs were remembering what they needed to do. Okay and it was more downhill at this point too.  Then I had to listen to my guts and head for the cover of the bushes in the creek (luckily I carry toilet paper with me).

I then saw these two garbage bags in the ditch.  I HATE people that litter.  Really you couldn't wait.

Then I noticed that all the cans were unopened and the catsup and mayo were only half gone.  The Pringles cans still had chips in them and the noodles weren't open either. The other bag looked like it was full of meat.  I didn't open it though.  Eww.   Littering AND wasteful.  I hope they got coal for Christmas.

Then I noticed Cola doing this and acting weird so I looked over where he was.

Don't look if you are easily offended or grossed out.  Really

Not sure exactly but guessing they were coyotes??  They were pretty small Totally skinned, gutted, and dumped by the side of the road.  There were at least ten of them. Too bad they weren't wolves.

A little freaky.  So I got out of there and finished my last interval.  It was my fastest one.

I did a bit of an easy run for another two miles one mile at half marathon pace and the last mile back home was into the wind.  I was wiped out by the time I was done but it felt GREAT to get some speed work in.

I saw a bunch of deer also I tried to get a better picture but by the time I whipped out  my camera they were pretty far away.
What are thoughts on the New Year New You attitude?  Do you find it as annoying as I do?

I know it is a great time to launch a new attitude and goals, but if why do you think you need a new year to do it?

  1. The dead animals on the side of the road is definitely a little freaky - wonder what happened...and surprised you were able to easily get your dog away from them...mine always gravitate towards dead stuff!

  2. Weird on the animals! People do some strange stuff sometimes!!

I get a little annoyed with the new year mentality, especially at the gym when it means I won't have any space to breathe for the next month :) At the same time, I always remind myself that if that's what it takes for some people, I guess it's better than nothing, right?!

  3. Those animal carcasses would have made me run my last 400s faster too! Scary! I hope your dog didn't roll in it--every dog I've ever had would've.

The New Year stuff doesn't bug me (except for the crowded gym issue Heather mentioned) because my goal isn't calendar related, so I just tend to ignore it. That helps!

  4. That was pretty freaky! New Year's stuff does annoy me. If it's worth it and you really want it, why wait until then?

  5. My birthday is in January, so pretty much I feel like every beginning of a new year is a new me that I need to get to know and make them better/ healthier. I've been doing a better job of that since 25... I'll be 28. eeks! :)

I'm always pretty much annoyed by the "January Joiners" at the WSU Rec Center, but most of them are just sorositutes that have to be there and the rest of them fade away eventually.

    Here's to a great 2012!

  6. Holy crap!! And I thought the raw chicken cutlets I saw on the sidewalk today were weird! My dog would have LOST HER S#*% if we saw that!

  7. I hate it when people litter. I can't even spit my gum in the bushes. I would feel so guilty. Besides the gross pictures, you always have the best running pictures! I would love to see deer on one of my runs. Good job on your speed work!

  8. Nice job on your run. I would have been totally grossed out from the skinned animals. I can't even run past a dead possum or squirrel without gagging. Weak stomach.

  9. The animals makes you wonder what weird people are out there. I am also not looking forward to the gym being crowded, you know that most of the people that start because it is the New Year will not last. It is those people who can start at any moment that will have more motivationt to keep at it.

  11. I have to admit that I like the idea of something of a fresh start or clean slate that starts with the new year. I think I also saw somewhere that people who set goals and resolutions are more satisfied and flourish more than those who don't. That said, I started a training program the last week in December and have projects that I will be pursuing in the next few days even though I could easily say screw it and wait to work on them until the beginning of the year.

    I hate litter.

  12. It bugs. When I want to change something or try something, I do it. I don't wait around until the new year. I don't get the whole new years resolution bit either. I make goals through out the year.
CREEPY DEAD STUFF, BTW. That would make me run like the wind!

  13. What an odd combination of things to see on a run! I do make New Year's resolutions but this year I set some Health & Fitness goals in May that stretch through February.

  14. I don't usually make resolutions, but I do appreciate the reminder to think about things I should change/revise, etc. Good for you for starting the speedwork today! I've been doing more this past month, but am feeling some old injuries crop up so I think I need to back off again... frustrating, b/c I love how powerful those runs are to make me feel physically and mentally stronger!

  15. I hate people who litter. I keep everything in my car/pocket/handbag/book bag until I can find a trash can. Just plain inconsideration.

Paddy Wag gravitates toward any animal renmants. Ewww!!!

  16. Great run! Scary on the dead animals!
I think it's silly to try to change with the new year, any time is a great time to change! For some people that arbitrary date is what they need, I guess whatever works.

  17. haha sometimes I avoid doing something new right at new years because I don't want it tagged as a resolution...I just want to do something new

  18. So many mags I subscribe to have referenced the new year new you on the cover. Not only do I question why wait for the new year but also what if I don't want a new me. Is it ok to have another year of the old me with new goals :)

I'm totally amazed that people think that it's perfectly fine to throw their trash out the car window when driving. Is it really that much of an imposition to wait until you stop to throw your trash in a widely available trash can?

  19. Oh my gosh, I would have high tailed it right out of there after I saw those dead skeletons too!!!!

  20. Geez, you had a seriously eventful run!

I don't usually do resolutions in the new year. I never saw the point, for me at least. But, last year's decision to run a marathon was kind of a big deal.

  21. I have friends who go crazy with eating and drinking this time of year, and then cut it all out on January 1st. Doesn't make sense to me!

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's crazy! Both the bones and uneaten food! We don't let any food go to waste around this house!
I really don't understand how people can just toss their garbage on the side of the road.

  23. I am bad, because when ever I have started a diet, I had to start it on a monday. It couldnt be any other day. I am wiser and older now so I dont do that any more . I really am just trying to stay healthy and fit all year round. They winter I have been doing great. I'm keeping focused and consistent with my workouts. Last year I was more of a couch potatoe. If I ran across those bones that would freak me out to. I would high tail it home. Hope you have a good New YEARS.

  24. I also hate the whole "new year, new you" lines on the magazines. Why put off a new you until a certain date? I think that's why so many people lose sight of their fitness regimens as the year rolls on, too, because they can just say, "well, I'll start over in January!" Good for you for getting out there!

  25. I think that littering is for the scum of the earth. I've never seen it as bad as I did when I was in Mexico. That county is beautiful and people just check all their crap out the window and onto the side of the HWY. I was in shock. Bags of garbage everywhere!! WTF?

I don't think I'm good at NY resolutions. I usually start mid year with something :)

  26. Hands down, that is the creepiest thing you can see on a run!

Because I love hearing from you all!
