Monday Motivation: Peaks to Prairie

It is 3 degrees out according to my thermometer, but the wind is blowing the snow straight across.  Not real hospitable out there this morning.  Yuck.

so what is my motivation today?

Peaks to Prairie! 

It is an adventure race that isn't until April, but I get to do it for the first time this year.  There is an 8.8 mile run portion, a 43 mile cycling leg, and a 23 mile paddling leg down the Yellowstone River.  No, I am not doing all three, but I am doing the run leg!

Registration isn't open yet and they haven't even set the date, but usually it is the third weekend in April.  Being a part of a team makes me feel even more pressure to perform well and run fast! Makes me nervous even thinking about it. 

The run leg drops about 900 feet over the length of the run, but I have heard this is a little deceptive as there are some pretty good hills in it as well. 

Here is the map from a previous year.  The course will be the same this year.  
It can also be done as a duathalon with just the run and bike legs.  I thought I had a team last year for the duathalon, but he ended up having a prior commitment and had to back out.  They try to match teams up looking for people and people looking for teams, but I was too late for that. :(  Boo


So my team better be committed for it this year.  I want to do it really bad! Should be so much fun.

  1. Wow, that is cold! The wind is what really bites. That is great motivation to get out there! Sounds like it will be a great adventure!

  4. It's not QUITE that cold where I am, but it's snowing sideways here, too! Kinda derailed my running plans- maybe tonight :).
    That race sounds like so much fun! I think that would be the only way I would ever be part of a triathlon/duathlon ;).

  6. That sound so awesome. I would love to do team thing like that. My motivation is my 3rd marathon in june, plus it is my first out of state marathon. I am really excited about doing it. My old running partner and new running partner are also doing it with me. That makes this marathon even more special than the last two.

  7. I haven't heard of the race but it sounds great, something that Abbey over at Half Dental Floss Will Travel would love! She does tons of adventure racing!

  9. That sound like so much fun! The thought of a jiggly butt and thighs motivates me:) Although it doesn't motivate me enough to run in the snow or 3 degree weather!

  13. I like the cold but 3 degree F with snow blowing ... ok .. that just gave me the chill bumps!

    Peaks to Prairie sounds like an exciting and fun event. I cannot wait to hear more about it! I bet it is beautiful!

  15. 3 degrees? Freaking awesome! The fact that that triathlon has no swimming? Awesome! Having to swim has temporarily pushed me from triathlons. Bring your camera for this one! I want to see pictures!!

  16. My motivation is that after 2 weeks of couch25k training I have lost 6 lbs. Woohoo!! And of course you are motivating me,too with your COLD weather and wind. I'm glad it's a mere 56 degrees here in Alabama! :)

  17. Great job! My inspiration today was running for Toni's Virtual Birthday Run, I wanted to get it done (because I tend to forget things if I put them off). I had a great run before work.

  18. BRRR! I have zero motivation today :( I haven't run in a week because of a car accident and now I'm traveling for work, climbing the walls with anxiety. Hoping I can hit the hotel gym tomorrow morning. I need a fix and to snap out of my foul mood.

  19. That sounds SO fun! And amazingingly beautiful, I am sure. I love doing relays with others...nothing makes you push as hard. Have a blast with it!

    I thought it was cold here at 16 - but 3?! Yikes! My motivation today...my kids had the day off and I needed some quiet time ;)

  24. That looks like a fun race! I hope your team sticks this year. It was hard for me to get out in the cold and wind today...I may have said some choice words to that wind when it was cutting straight into me like a wall I had to run through...but in the end I was glad I put on my sneaks and got out there :)
