I decided to try and do my long runs during the week. It seems to work out a little better that way. I can still fit in a 5k on the weekend that way if I want to and call it speed work.
I was supposed to work today but we weren't that busy so I got the day off. YAY!
My sister agreed to take my kids still while I ran. When I stepped outside this morning to get something out of my car I was greeted by great gusts of wind. Boo.
I considered putting off my long run, but decided to be tough and just get to it. The first couple of miles weren't too bad, but at mile 6 I turned to run into the wind. It was blowing at 25 miles an hour and some gusts were much higher than that. They would seem to steal the air right out of me and make it hard to breath. I felt at times like I was not moving at all.
I ran into the wind for 3 miles and had splits of 10:44, 10:29, and 10:48. But the rest weren't so bad and the wind seemed to let up a little after that, and now as I am typing this it is probably half of what it was. I ended up averaging 9:07 minutes miles, despite that three really slow ones.
I did notice that at 19 miles I felt better than I did when I ran 19 miles last week. Mile 21 was the really killer one this time. I think I fueled a little smarter this time, I fueled earlier and more often and that seemed to help although by the end I was just tired and ready to be done. 5.2 miles away from a marathon!
Crazy! At one time I would have sworn that I would NEVER do that distance it was too far and I just was made to run that far. Ha! Look at me now! :)
Did I mention that I went to the Hunger Games last night?
SO GOOD! Although as expected not nearly as good as the books and if you haven't read the books, I recommend you do so before you see the movie. Some of it seemed a little lacking. and ugh the way they shot the movie was crazy I got motion sickness from watching it and my older sister got a migraine. It was crazy. Anyone else have that problem with it?
and this was too funny not to share, I found it on Pinterest of course.
WOOHOO congrats on your 21 miler!!
ReplyDeleteWind is my enemy...I am always impressed with all the wind that you run through up there. We had a little wind during a long run the other week and I felt like I was going to blow over! I would have given up if I had been alone.
And the Rehoboth Marathon was windy in two spots, but I hid behind a tall man so that it wouldn't be as bad hahaha.
Do I whine about the wind a lot? :) We do get a lot of wind. It can be a beautiful day in town and then I will drive home and BAM its windy, I live at a higher elevation and it seems to be windier up here!
DeleteCongrats on your 21 miler girl. Those are tough. Mine is coming up in a few weeks and I'm already dreading it. I know I have to go into it with a postitive additude. Those last miles can be killers. Your doing awesome on your marathon training, so keep it going girl. So excited for youl
ReplyDeleteThanks! I am so excited too! I think the first couple miles are almost harder than the last, just knowing how far I have to go still, I love hitting the half way point knowing, I am going to really do it!
DeleteAwesome run! I hate running in the wind too. Sometimes I feel like I am just running in place:)
ReplyDeletecongrats on 21 miles, I am still in the club of that is not going to happen in my lifetime. :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 21!!!!! I'm gonna see HG this weekend and I'm hoping I love it as much as the book :)
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the 21!! That is awesome! The longest I ran before my marathon was 20 and that was hard! I found that when I ran my marathon, I actually hit the wall around mile 23, not the mile 20 that so many talk about. Fueling is key!
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the Hunger Games yet; I did read the books though and really liked them! I never thought about the name being Peeniss though. Funny.
You are rocking those long runs! I'm so excited for you and your first marathon. Uffff I hate the wind. It does really seem to steal your breath away!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the run! Saw the Hunger Games Friday night. I didnt get sick but didn't like it either. I'm guessing they did it to not make it as violent?? Absolutely love their couple name - too funny!!
ReplyDeleteI think you are going to love marathoning. And you're going to be so ready for that race in July.
ReplyDeleteAwesome training! Know that without a doubt, if you can run 21, you can run a marathon. Great work!
ReplyDeleteSo funny about Katniss and Peeta! I just finished book one and want to see the movie now!
Great job on the 21! I hate running in the wind. It is the worst.
ReplyDeletefantastic....you will be more than ready. look at that! and you still have plenty of time. this is awesome. so happy for you. the wind is hard that and the heat! you are tough!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on 21! You are going to rock your marathon!!! I've done one 20, am running a relay in Texas this weekend, then I'll have another 21 or 22 miler before I taper for my first. Figuring out the hydration and fueling is tough, but I think I'm getting better at it with each long run.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 21!! Wahoo!I love the Pinterest pic. That's hilarious!
ReplyDeleteyou are so awesome! You are going to rock your marathon!!!
ReplyDeleteI read the Hunger Games books so I think I have some high expectations too, but I can't wait to see it anyways! I'm sorry to hear about the motion sickness and your sister's migraine, sometimes I can get motion sickness, I hope that doesn't happen to me too :(
ReplyDeleteCongrats on the 21 miles! You could do a marathon tomorrow I bet if you wanted, though if you train up to it, you will get a great time.
ReplyDeleteThe wind sounds brutal where you live!
And I saw Hunger Games and loved it! I put a detailed review on my blog, but I thought it was my favorite movie since The Departed - which I think came out in 2006. It was awesome. I'm not reading the books, and they are great too!
It seemed like every run I did last year was windy~ ugghh!! Awesome pace for 21 miles:)
ReplyDeleteWay to go 21!!! I haven't seen the movie yet, loved the books!
ReplyDeleteYou are going to be so ready for Missoula! :-)
ReplyDeleteI went and watched HG on Friday night and loved it! I agree with you that you should read the books before and also that the books are always better than the movie.
Way to go on your awesome run! I would rank that as highly awesome. Especially in the wind. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteSo great to hear you are doing so well.. we have had big winds here this week too. Lucky we got our run done today before the wind came up!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work, Christy.
Look at you go!!! You are rocking those miles. Love it, keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteWhat an epic run! You're going to be so ready for that marathon!
ReplyDeleteI didn't like how the movie was shot, mostly in the beginning. I am not sure if the shakiness got better or if I or used to it. I enjoyed it and my husband did too. I read the books but he didn't. I am looking forward to the rest of the movies.
ReplyDeleteNice job on those miles! My next goal is the half but I have a long ways to go with the training.
Good warning on the migraine - I'm off to see the movie today.
ReplyDeletePeniss - thats LOL funny!
We've been having insane winds here, too. I can't believe you did your long run in it! Awesome job!!
ReplyDeleteI heard that they shot the movie like that to make it more like you were seeing things from Katniss' perspective (like in the book). It definitely messes with your head.
Ok so do you live near me because it's sooo stinking windy here!!!!!! Kudos to you for digging deep!
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the 21 miles!! You are so hardcore to run in that wind!
ReplyDeleteAmazing job on the 21 miler! Seriously I am always impressed at how rockin you are with these long distances!!! It was like you were meant to do them all along!!! Wind just plain sucks! I feel like it is always windy here but that is some serious wind you had!
ReplyDeleteWow!!! Very nice. If you made all the way to mile 21 and felt pretty good then you're well on your way!! I can't wait for your first marathon!!
ReplyDeleteawesome amazing job on your run!!! especially in the crazy wind!!!!! i am not a fan of the wind so you are a rock star to me :)
ReplyDeleteNICE work on the long run! I feel the same way you used to (only, I still feel that way :-)) - 12 miles is my longest run ever. Just turn those numbers around, & we have your 21 miles. It's almost the same, right? ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou are amazing Chirsty! Way to go!! 21 miles...wow!!
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! What a run Christy!
ReplyDeleteI had the same "Ohh, I'm dizzy" feeling when I saw Hunger Games. I felt like it was a bad call. If they want to make you feel Katniss' emotions, then they shouldn't have to use camera angles. Like in a good book...you don't have to be TOLD what a character is feeling, everything about the writing should be letting you know.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the 21 miles! You are an endurance machine!
FABULOUS 21 miles! The wind - it is horrible. I'd rather deal with any other weather than wind. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI laughed so hard at the peeta/katniss picture :) I haven't seen it yet, but my daughter did, and she loved it. Waiting for my turn...
