Racing Plans and Fun New Things

Tomorrow I have my first race of the year coming up and I am so excited and yet kind of not.  I don't feel like I have been doing the speed work for a 5k, but I didn't feel like that last year either and did pretty good.  I am excited to see where I am at with my training though.

Last year I did a lot of 5ks, 5 mile, and 10k races.  This year I still plan to do some, but due to training for a marathon (MY FIRST) on July 8th, I am cutting in the half (or more) the number of shorter races I will do this spring.

I am signed up for a 9.3 mile on April 22 (Peaks to Prairie Adventure Race) and a 5 mile race May 12th (The Montana Womens Run and one of my all time favorite races.  Biggest race in Montana by far.  So much fun!  I am contemplating a 10k the weekend after and 5 mile race or there is one three weeks before the marathon.  I would really like to do a 10k before the marathon but not sure I like any of my choices.

There is a half marathon two weeks after the marathon I am running.  Would I be crazy to sign up for it?  It is hard to pass up since it only costs $20 for the Big Sky State Games half marathon.  Can be a hot one, but $20!? is a little hard to pass up, especially since there are only two half marathons near me and that is one of them.

Of course I also have Hood to Coast in August.... so excited for that one.  SO EXCITED! Sadly it is also the weekend of another one of my favorite races, but I think I can handle missing it for the relay of a lifetime!

I took the kids to a St Patricks day parade today.  We left after an hour and a half, we were hungry and thirsty and I was starting to think it would never ever end.  It was madness with all the kids scrambling for candy.

I did pick up a great wind/rain resistant jacket at my favorite running store Time Out Sports for over 50% off, in case it decides to rain a lot this spring.  The rain coat I already have is really heavy duty and HOT to run in.
ALSO my Mom decided to get the latest and greatest iPad and guess who got her old one  :)  I have a new obsession I think.  and now I am going to go kick my son off of it so I can play with it.
I have the best Mom.  and I am not just saying that because she watches my kids a lot so I can run and do races, or because she spoils me sometimes.

I really do have the best Mom :)

  1. I am jealous you are running HTC! Maybe I will get lucky like I did last year and get to join a team at the last minute. Probably not, but you never know! I grew up close to Seaside so when you are there you will be close to my parent's farm! :-)

  2. I don't think it's crazy to sign up for a race two weeks after your marathon. When I was done with mine, I ran a lot the first week, even though some sources said to take it easy. I think you will be fine! And for $20, if you are not fine for some reason, you are not losing much!

  3. And I hope she reads your blog! Nice to get new toys.

Sounds like you are getting things sorted out.

I think you are fine to run that half 2 weeks after your marathon... you have young speedy legs!

    3. I am running with Team Beef Montana, so probably no one you know, but two girls on the team are great friends of mine that I almost never get to see so I am pumped about that.

  6. sign up for the $20 half! I just signed up for one that I got a heck of a steal on for $29 and it is 7 days after I complete the SBK 3-day, 60 mile walk. I figure if I can't do it...I am not out that much.

  8. Best wishes for your 5k! You'll do great ;)

I would sign up for the half but have low expectations. Marathons can be tricky to recover from and with this being you really won't know how your body handles it until go time. Post marathon I still can make the distance and the endurance still lingers on for quite some time, but speed disappears and takes quite awhile to come back. So I say sign up but keep it on your radar as maybe a fun pressure free shake out race.

  9. I think you should sign up for the half. It is too cheap to pass up. If you are up to it, you can race it. If not, just run for fun, and worse come to worse, you can even skip it if you don't feel ok. It's not like you will be wasting $75. yeah to Best Mom!

  10. 2 weeks post marathon should be fine to run a half. You might not be able to race it as fast as you want, but that will depend on how hard you go in the marathon. :)

  12. I think that half 2 weeks after your marathon would be fine. We got a Ipad from a seed dealer. I don't use it,but my hubby which doesn't like computer think it is so cool. Now he can sit in his recliner and do stuff on the Ipad and watch Tv, that is when ever he comes in from outside. Dont see him much right now to busy with calving.

  14. I personally have run half marathon distances even the week I ran a marathon. Depends on how you recover, your base, etc. You don't have to "race" a half marathon, you could always just run it.

  15. I so excited that you get to run HTC!! Someday I will be there!
I say definitely do the half after the marathon- you can't beat 20 bucks.
