Random Marathon Training Thoughts, would love any input!

I got in a 7 mile recovery run this morning and then had to take the kids in to the dentist to get their cavities filled.  I think they were a lot more excited about it than I was. Of course my son also picked this day to grow out of his jeans so I had to go jeans shopping for him as well.  He was shocked that he could be wearing a size 6 when he was only 5.

He was sure that he wouldn't be wearing them until he turned 6.  Good thing sizes don't work that way once you get older.  I hope I never wear a size 34 this year!

My legs were really feeling the 21 mile run from yesterday.  I am glad I still have three months to get in lots of longer runs and feel more confident about them.  I was feeling really done after 21 miles yesterday and have a hard time imagining finishing a marathon without falling over in agony at this point.  I suppose the race day excitement helps a little bit, but wow, this is really hard.  \

Not that I expected marathon training to be a piece of cake.  I remember the first year I trained for a half marathon and feeling like my whole lower body was wanting to fall into pieces at the end of a 12 mile run.  12 miles now feels like a piece of cake or at least is a whole lot easier.

I am worried about getting an injury between now and then but there isn't a whole lot of sense wasting time worrying about it, as long as I train smart and not over do it I should be all right.  What I really need to do is get a training plan wrote down on paper and start following it, or at least attempting to follow it.

I have moved my long runs to the middle of the week.  It seems to be working pretty good so far, that way I feel like if I do a race on the weekend I can incorporate that into my schedule as speedwork and be ready to do a long run mid week again.

Is that crazy?

I also am planning to do two long runs of 20 or above followed by a cut back week or two.  The cut back weeks I am going to try to do when I have a race coming up so that instead of doing a 22 mile long run followed three days later by a race, I will do a 12-16 mile long run and leave my legs that much more rested.

I am also going to continue to play around with refueling during long runs.

I would love any advice on anything here or anything random having to do with marathon training.  I am such a newbie at it  :)

101 days  until I do it!

  2. The jean size just cracked me up! Kids are so funny. If moving your long run to the middle of the week works for you then go for it. I like to do my long run on the day I know my race is. I am weird like that.

I still don't have fueling down right. I have started drinking more electrolytes on long runs which has seemed to help me. I also have water too.

  3. I am still struggling with my half marathon schedule so I have no advice.. only pom poms to be a cheerleader for you!

I laughed when I read about 12 miles being a piece of cake. I cannot imagine that. :)

  5. You are still so far ahead of the game having already getting in a 21miler with still over 3months to go. Keep up the good work and listen to your body. Remember rest is just as important as the miles.
    You are gonna kill it!

  7. I agree with Missy. Don't most 1st timer marathon training plans have you do a 20 miler as your last long run 3 weeks before a marathon?

I think you are going to be rocking that marathon!

  8. You are definitely ready! You could do one next weekend and do it well!! Three months? It's yours!! You may find one before then :) I did that with my first half- I did my first 3 months before planned and my first 50k a month before my planned first. Good luck with your training!

  9. I'm running my first full this year, so I don't really have much good advice yet, but wow, the fact that you can run 21 miles sure makes me think you've got this thing in the bag!

  10. sounds to me like you've got this! I am no 26.2 runner, so not really much I can say, other than 101 days is not that far away and I know you'll do great! keep up the great training...

  11. Not crazy at all!! I considered doing my long runs in the middle of the week too. I just never did, not sure why. I also TOTALLY understand about the injury thing.. I'm 30 some odd days out and I'm still scared stiff! One day at a time. That's my advice

  12. I think you're on the right track, your distances sound right in line with what I did during my training. Don't worry about the exhaustion after the 21 or having a bad long run. I remember my friend telling me that it's better to have an awful training run than an awful marathon. You're just getting the awful out of the way.

Do you wear compression after your long runs? I usually wear compression shorts and socks for almost the entire day afterwards and that REALLY helps.

  13. Follow the plan but don't be owned by the plan. If you feel that your body needs an extra day of rest... or a different # of miles on the calendar for that day, do what your body tells you. The fact that you have already accomplished a 21+ miler makes me think you are ready RIGHT NOW for the 26.2. you go girl:)

  14. you are a WAY better and more experienced runner than I am but, as I sit here with my first real injury I'd say YOU CAN NEVER RUN YOUR LONG RUNS TOO SLOW. and don't increase your millage by more than 10% (which is what every running mag/runner and sports doc says) but it's true. I had that one long run that was WAY too fast for me, increased my millage super fast and here I am - injured. so I think you'll be safe as long as you listen to everyone else :D

    Can't wait!!!!

  15. You sound like you're doing great so far! Wish I had lots of marathon training advice, but having only two under my belt, there's not much to share. I've always done training plans generated by the Runner's World SmartCoach tool. I think you'll be just fine since you just nailed that 21 miler!

  16. I would love to give advice here...but honestly can't...haven't run a marathon yet, but hoping to in November. Then, you can give me advice ;) Honestly though, you sound like you already know what to do...and I have a feeling you will be nailing it!!!

  17. WHOA. You have 3 months to go and you're already running 21 milers??!! You are going to KILL it! It sounds like you're already on the right track of being careful though, I wouldn't run too many super long runs just to keep the injury monsters at bay. Definitely REST whenever you need it. You are dominating!

  18. That is too funny about your son! I taught kindergarten for 6 years so I REALLY see the beauty in their innocence! :)

You are rocking with your marathon training. I am trying to build up from 3 miles to 6 miles and feel like I'm dying! :) AND I am a SLOW RUNNER on top of that! :)

  19. I'll be doing my second marathon this June, and I remember training being really hard. My first 20 miler felt like it would never end. But, you are right that we used to feel that way about 12 miles and now 12 is awesome. Keep thinking like that and hang in there! You'll do great.

  20. You seem so well prepared all ready. I didn't do runs that long until closer to race time, but doing them earlier sounds smart. You should feel tired, 21 miles is a long way to run! Keep up your positive attitude.

  21. The thing about marathon training that I've learned is that some of the long runs are going to be NO fun and you'll be really sore after some of them....and others will feel really good and you feel amazing after some of them. You never can predict it. And you also shouldn't let any one run make you doubt your race.

I think you're doing great. A plan will help a lot, too, so I agree you should write one down.
