Three Things Thursday

1.  I have to admit I have been a little jumpy since a mountain lion was spotted so close to my house, but at the same time I don't want to live my life in fear and be stuck inside.  I ran later in the morning today and carried my pepper spray.  I also ran along the wheat fields that have been combined recently so that if there was a big cat he wouldn't be able to sneak up on me.  No good hiding spots...just acres and miles of empty wheat fields the perfect color to camoflage a mountain lion....

No I didn't see any.  I also left my ipod at home and watched my dog very carefully, hoping he would be able to see one before I did.

2. 8 miles.  That is how far I ran yesterday with no foot pain.  Longest run since the marathon earlier this month..YAY!  Felt so good.  I originally planned 6, but it felt good so I kept running.  Once I got to 8 I considered 10, but then decided the smartest thing to do would be to call it a day.  So I went home biked 2 miles and rode the elliptical for another 6.5.

Marathons really take a lot longer to recover from than half marathons.

3.  I recently canceled our Dish Network subscription and for the most part have not missed it. I got tired of paying 70 dollars a month for hundreds of channels I don't watch.  I miss the DVR part, but for the most part am so happy with my decision.

I went ahead earlier this month and signed up for NetFlix.  What a great thing.  I started watching Grey's Anatomy from the beginning.  Some episodes I had never seen, or forgotten.  I am almost done with the second season already.  It is like an addiction.  I put it on the iPad while I am cooking supper, while cleaning the house and while I am cross training on the elliptical.  I can think of several other shows I want to watch once I am done with Greys.

  1. Hooray for running without foot pain! The wheat fields with that blue open sky look like they were an amazing backdrop for your run. I always run with pepper spray when I'm outdoors because I'm afraid of dogs running up to me and attacking me. Unfortunately, there are a lot of irresponsible dog owners out there who don't keep their dogs properly tied up/on leash.

  2. I have Netflix and it is literally the reason I don't have cable :) I watched the entire Grey's series a few months ago!

  3. Nice job on your run (and avoiding mountain lions!).

We cancelled cable a couple of years ago and just got netflix streaming. It's awesome. I don't miss cable at all, but it is funny when you read the news online about all the hype about movies, etc. and you're like "i've never even heard of that movie!" because you don't watch commercials anymore.

  4. Holy crap, a mountain lion is scary stuff. Hopefully it's moved on! Yay on no foot pain and for saving money! I've thought about netflix but doesn't it use a lot of your internet data?

  7. We just got Dish after not having cable for 4 years, but it's not all that great! We still watch so much on DVD anyway. I've been meaning to catch up on Grey's this summer too!

  8. A mountain lion? GAH! The worst I ever have to worry about it is a drunk and those are pretty easy to outrun. ;o)

Glad to hear you had no foot pain.

  9. I would cancel our Dish if my husband would let me, but he needs his NBA, UFC and a some other shows. I could easily live with just Netflix.
Congrats on the run! I am 2 days post marathon and it will be awhile before I will be running again! Definitely a longer recovery time.

  10. A mountain lion is what I always fear when I'm out west running on trails! But it's a trade-off--you have beautiful trails, I'm sure. Hopefully you will not encounter him any time soon!

Yes, totally agree that marathons take a long time from which to recover. It can be really deceiving sometimes!

  11. We have Netflix instead of cable too. I love that you can watch as many episodes as you want in a row, and you don't have to wait a week to see what is going to happen. It helps with my crazy show addictions.

  12. I love Grey's Anatomy and am sure there are tons of episodes I have missed! The problem with getting several episodes at once is that I watch them all in a row and then I am not only wasting more time, but then I am sad that they are almost over! It's like ice cream. You eat the entire container and then are kind of sick and kind of sad that it's gone. :)

  14. I have netflix instead of cable and the only reason I miss cable is because I like watching a lot of sports on tv (and because of the Olympics) but right now I can't afford it so netflix instead is a good option. That is scary to know that there is a mountain lion in your area! Hope you never see it!

  15. Glad you were able to have a pain free run, they are soo enjoyable after experiencing painful ones for a period of time.

So my idea to complete a half marathon 3 weeks after my first full marathon may not be the brightest idea? Oh well, I'm only doing it for the beer afterwards. Doesn't matter how horrible I look doing it :)

  16. I would be freaking out about running outside too! I don't think I would ever want to run into a mountain lion under any circumstance.
We cancelled our dish 2 months ago and I haven't missed it much. It has given me more time to read, make crafty things, and keep up on chores around the house. Not sure if or when we will hook it back up. Thanks to hulu I can watch any show I want on the computer. We used to have netflix, but we stopped that too.

  19. Believe it or not they have sightings of mountain lions here in central Nebraska. I have considered taking along one or two runners that I know I can out run. That way I won't have to out run the Mountain Lion, just the other two.

Glad to hear you had 8 pain free miles!

We kicked Direct TV out 4 months ago. 93 bucks added to the budget and Hulu is free. we have not missed it one bit! Happy running!!

  21. You are braver than I! I am so afraid of wild life. Wuss, I know. I just can't seem to give up my tv, the dvr is a life saver sometimes! Plus, we are HUGE Olympics watchers!
