I feel a little frustrated right now. My runs feel sucky. The longest run I have done since July 8th is 10 miles and that was once. No speed work. No races. Just a lot of elliptical and biking and sub par running.
Maybe I am expecting too much. Having never run a marathon before I figured it would take a week or two and then I would be back to my happy running self. Not so, I have been dealing with foot pain although that is finally getting better and lateral hip pain that once I get warmed up I don't even notice while running. I do notice when getting out of bed and out of chairs.
I am planning to see a physical therapist after my son starts school to see if I can get rid of the lateral hip pain, which I have been dealing with since March or April. First it was the left side and now it is in the right also. The left is feeling a lot better though and I can actually sleep on that side again.
I feel frustrated. I am supposed to be doing a half marathon at the end of September and it seems so out of reach right now. I could push my workouts harder, but I just don't think my body is ready.
Sure I have been doing a lot of cross training and HIIT workouts, and they feel good, but they aren't running. Running is not being my friend right now, or maybe it is but not the way I want it to. To top it off, it is nasty hot out there with no relief in sight. I hate being hot.
Are you tired of my whining yet? I am just frustrated. I want running to feel easy and amazing the way it did the first 20 miles of my marathon. I want to feel in love with running again. Don't get me wrong, I am super excited to go and run Hood to Coast, but I just don't feel in top running shape. Especially compared to where I was 1 month ago.
I did get up and run 6 miles this morning and the last mile was in the rain! Yay for rain.
and the cute kitten part..
Rocky is doing good. The oil I put in his bottle has seemed to help, and the tummy rubs to help simulate peristalsis. He is growing and any day now his eyes should open. He still sleeps a lot which is good, although I am getting up once a night still to feed him. and burp him, and help him try to poo and pee.
I feel like I could have written this post (no kitten, but yours is super cute!!!) I have a marathon in 3 weeks that I have no business doing. Everything hurts and more aches keep getting added to the list. Things have got to get better for us, right? I want to feel the hoy in running again! I hope you feel it soon!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, kitten is ADORABLE! That is so cool.
ReplyDeleteFirst, let me introduce myself. My name is Maureen. I am a 40-something woman who has lost 75 pounds and been at goal for 3 years. Started running for the first time in my life a little over 3 years ago, right before I got to goal.
I ran my first half marathon last October, another in the spring, first one on hills, and have run a few other famous races in this area (Philadelphia). I have recently registered for my first ever marathon in November and into training now.
I have read a lot about after the marathon and what you're blogging about is exactly what I have been reading. In fact, one friend that I blog with is a few months off of her first marathon, and she's still feeling this way.
I am expecting that by the time I finish, I will be pretty beat up, and although mentally, I want to run and enjoy it, physically, I may not be able to.
Hang in there. You'll get it back. It will come.
P.S. LOVE reading your blog.
You're such a good kitty mommy. :) I'm so happy you're doing that for her. Most people wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way after my first marathon in June. It took me about 4 weeks to start feeling good running again. I struggled more with the mental aspect ~ "I just ran 26.2 miles, why can't I run 3?" Now I'm trying to recover from a self-inflicted injury from trying to do a cartwheel!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you are being whiny... I just think that it is taking you longer to recover than you thought it should. And since it WAS your first marathon, that is to be expected - how could you really KNOW what to expect? Be patient with yoursel, hard as it is, and it will happen for you.
ReplyDeleteI love that you are taking such good care of Rocky. Just read that paragraph and showed the pic to The Captain, who is also so impressed by your kind care to the sweet wee kitten.
Hope you are having a great Saturday!
Cute kitty! I remember being in a funk for a while after running a marathon. There was some things that happened with the girls I trained with but overall it was just me and my funky runs. I ran another half and then took time off (granted I got pregnant with my first but still). Coming back, my spark was back! I think you're doing the right thing...your running spark will be back in no time!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you are being whinny at all! I totally understand how you feel and not being 100% with your running can really gets you down. It is good thing that you have slowed the runs down and are going to see a PT. I am sure they will be able to help you and you will be back to normal in no time. Rocky is so cute and he is so lucky to have found you to take care of him. I love animals and I am so happy that you have such a kind heart to take care of him :)
ReplyDeleteSounds like your body just needs more time. Glad you're going to see the PT. Hope your running groove returns soon!
ReplyDeleteagree on body needing more time- it will tell you when its ready.
ReplyDeletei'm not a big cat person, but your kitten is ADoraBLE!
I feel your pain, my 7 mile run yesterday was so frustrating. I couldn't get my breathing or running in a good rhythm and I just kept wanting to stop and walk, it was not fun! Good luck, hope you get your groove back!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you are being whiny. I have read enough blogs from different people who gets "stuck in a rut" (or so to speak) after a marathon. Your body just needs time. And going to the physical therapist isn't a bad idea either. Just hang in there. Do what you can. Adjust the expectations a little. And meanwhile, you have all of us here to vent, rant or whatever you need. The running/blogging community is a supportive and sympathetic bunch. :)
ReplyDeleteBarring this (minor) stress fracture setback, I'll be running my 1st marathon in Oct. I actually started reading your blog leading up to *your* first. I was excited to see how it went for you.
ReplyDeleteI'm then supposed to run a 1/2, the following month. Your current experience isn't terrible encouraging...;)
I'm sorry it's taking you so long to get back to your old running self. That must be really, really frustrating. It sounds like you're doing everything right, though. It'll happen...
I'm sorry about your lingering pain. Hope you're pain free soon!
