Monday Motivation

Happy Monday!  Hope everyone had a great weekend. I have personally always like Mondays of course maybe it helps that I don't work on Mondays usually.


Yes, I just quoted The Duke on my running blog. I grew up with John Wayne as an icon.  My best friend in college had a life sized John Wayne in her apartment and we always quoted his "Talk low, talk slow and don't say too much" quote.  Other favorites are "If you've got them b the balls their heats and minds will follow". My son discovered John Wayne movies recently wants to watch them all the time, that and dinosaur movies.

When I saw the above quote I thought how perfect it is for running.  It can apply to not only tomorrow in general, but the next race, the next training cycle/plan,  or the next year.  If we don't learn from our past mistakes we are doomed to repeat them.

Some important things I have learned not to do are:

  • eat a bag of cherries the night before a long run
  • slam a glass of Emergen-C right before a run
  • take the toilet paper out of my hydration belt
  • eat a GU when my stomach feels upset
  • start out a half marathon at 5k pace
  • run with no eye protection when it is 30 below zero with the windchill
I have learned some other things about hydration, pacing, but I decided to keep it light today.  It is Monday after all.

What are some things you have learned not to do?

  1. Great list. Let me add "eat broccoli the night before a marathon." Yes, I was stupid enough to do that once.

  2. I've learned not to go without compression shorts under my skirts...can you say chub rub? Ouchie!!

  3. Oh man! Those are some serious running lessons!

    I've learned not to mess with what works. I really can't change anything the night before a long run or I'm pretty much screwed.

    Do you just wear sunglasses as eye protection?

  4. I've learned not to go for a run immediately following a dinner of chimichangas washed down with 2 margaritas. Which then taught me I need to chew my food rather than swallowing it all whole.

  5. Great list Christy! I have learned a lot of things to do and not do. One of them would be to not eat PF Changs the night before a race. Not good. :/

  6. I love The Duke!! McLintock is my very favorite.
    I learned that I am much stronger than I ever thought I was and I can overcome more than I ever thought I could.

  7. Oh I'm so with you on the no GU on an upset stomach...yep, learned that one the hard way! I've also learned don't underestimate the importance of hydration on winter runs!

  8. Thanks for the heads up on the 1/2 here in March. I got kind of excited about it and I just signed up :S I don't like to announce it publicly, at least not until I'm sure I'm ready for it, but yes. I am training for a marathon in April (SLC). That 1/2 will be great training! We'll have to hook up there and you can waste me!

  9. I'd say slamming ANYTHING right before a run is a no-no. Also, eating tuna for lunch before an after work run. Ewww.

  10. I've learned not to wear any shorts aside from long compression ones. It doesn't pay to chafe. I've also learned that to read event information even when running a race with a friend.

  11. Oh man! Cherries before a run? Awful... You poor thing! I have learned, the hard way, no alcohol for me before a long ride. The sugars burn down great the first hour---but it's pure torture & drag ass after that. ;)

  12. I'm with Miss Zippy on broccoli (cauliflower and lentils, too). I've also learned not to skimp on BodyGlide before a marathon, especially on my feet.

    EmergenC, though...I never would have suspected that one!

  14. That list made me laugh- I have chugged a cup of Emergen-C immediately before a run. Not a good idea.
