Things That Leave Me Wordless Wednesday

Marissa had a great post today that made me think of this story.

Last weekend I was picking up my Bountiful Basket when I got talking to the lady behind me.  She mentioned that she was pretty new to getting baskets, but she was really loving them because for the first time she had fresh fruit in the house for the family to snack on.  She didn't usually think to buy them.  Her husband she stated was also loving having fresh veggies with dinner, he had grown up that way and was missing it.

I have to say I was at a loss about what to say about that, but it did in part explain her and her children's obesity.  If she wasn't thinking to have fresh fruits and veggies in the house before, what was in the house for snacks and meals?!

I guess it just goes to show some things I think are so basic really aren't.

I still feel a little speechless about it.  There's really people like that.

  1. This really is true though! When I was with my ex husband (before my fitness and weight loss journey), I thought I was normal keeping things like Doritos, and candy, and canned puddings and things in the house for snacking. And it turns out... I was right! It IS NORMAL. And that's the scary part.... We keep NONE of that here. No soda. No chips. No junk. Our fridge is stocked with many, many colorful pieces of deliciousness. Our diets (and health) have drastically improved... It makes me sad that people are so addicted to the junk that makes them unhealthy....

  2. It is truly crazy how some people eat. I guess they just think to go with the easy stuff in the middle of the store...

  3. It's true. I don't really understand how people exist like that, it seems like such second nature to me to include fresh produce in our diet. It's not even a consideration - it just IS.

  5. My sister & I have had many conversations about this topic. How are things that seem like total common sense to us, so completely foreign to other people? For example : no one had to tell me not to fill my kids' baby bottles with soda...it was just something I knew. Why does that instinct not kick in for other parents?

  6. I wish I would have grown up with fruits and veggies. I didn't and now I will purposely take them out so they get reached for first, NOT junk. Old habits die hard. Totally sad.

  7. I think you end up living what you lived. No one told me soda in a baby's bottle wasn't good either, but I knew, because we weren't allowed to have soda growing up. No one told me that you should have veggies with your meal but I knew because as kids we had veggies with every meal. If you didn't live that as a child, then what you did live with is 'your normal'.

    That is pretty sad though.

  9. I remember growing up our after school snack was always a bowl of whatever fruit was in season. I couldn't imagine living without fresh fruits and veggies and am so thankful that my parents taught me that! I know quite a few people that don't know what many fruits or veggies even are...

  10. I would have been speechless too! I've heard stories of people not knowing where food comes from other than the supermarket shelf, and it makes me grateful to have been raised on a farm where all the beef and lamb, and most of the fruit and vegetables were home-grown. I think the closer to the source, the better!

  12. My daughter came home from the school the other day and told me that her teacher asked who had bowls of fresh fruit at their house (for snacks). She said that only 3 kids raised their hands. I am so happy to say that she was one of the 3. It does show that how different every family is, though.

  13. Wow. Just wow. I was at Walmart buying some fruit when I was working in Missouri and the guy in front of me had: canned chili, several 2 L bottles of coke and a bunch of frozen pizzas. I can understand not having a salad with every meal, but you have to have SOME veggies!

  14. I get so angry sometimes when I see parents making obviously terrible decisions about food with their obese children. It makes me really sad.
