Some of these shoes are completely toast for running and other I hardly wore because they just ended up not being compatible with me. A couple are still in rotation.
a ridiculous amount of shoes |
I ended up getting rid of seven pairs, but then I admit I later took another pair back so I really only got rid of 6. I am going to take them in to Goodwill. Someone else can still get a lot of wear out of them.
Two I actually kept for sentimental value, which is stupid I admit, but I just wasn't ready to get rid of my Pureflows. The originals were so amazing and the 2s such a disappointment. I have high hopes for the 3s although since I just ordered 2 pairs of Altras I am not going to worry about it till next spring or so.
I posted that picture on Instagram and someone commented that their running shoe limit was 5. I think this is a great rule however since I would have to get rid of 6 more pairs to keep that rule I am out. I could see setting it at 9 and getting rid of 2 more pairs.
We have lived in below zero conditions since Thursday night although pretty sure windchills had it below zero before then. It is 1 above now but with the windchill -18. Saturday we were colder than the South Pole. Correct me if I am wrong, but that seems so wrong. Alaska had 36 degrees when we were -24. They were 60 degrees warmer? Seems so messed up
from sometime this weekend |
The kids and I are feeling a little bit of cabin fever. Cooped up. Crazy! I haven't run outside since...at least 9 days? It's been pretty nasty out here weather wise and even I have limits. I don't run outside if it is colder than -10 especially if it is windy and I am limiting myself to 9 pairs of running shoes in the house. (I am not counting the two pairs I have at work).
Now I just have to decide which two to get rid of before my new ones come. (Maybe I will stash some more at work so I can rotate them there).
What is your shoe limit? Do you have one?
Nike has a program called Reuse A Shoe. They take old running shoes (don't have to be Nikes) and grind them up to make surfaces for playgrounds, tracks, and courts all over the world. You can send your shoes in to them. That' s what I do.

I have 4 pair hanging around. One with 0 miles so far. My marathon shoes, I will keep forever. I totally get the sentimental thing with shoes. I just can't part with them.
ReplyDeleteBrrr!! I have never felt cold like that. Now I feel silly for refusing to run outside this morning because it was 35 :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still a newbie so I've got just three. I have the PureFlow 2 and I really dislike them. I'm so mad at myself for not returning them when I had the chance. My faves are my Mizuno Wave Precisions and I love them so much I might just keep them forever. I never thought I would get so attached to a pair of shoes!
Wow! After reading your post, running in 40 degrees tomorrow won't seem quite so bad!
ReplyDeleteI'm currently only rotating between two pairs, since my feet grew after my first pregnancy and I had to start from scratch! :)
ReplyDeleteI had to also! I went up from a 7 or a 7.5 to an 8.5 or a 9!
DeleteI only have like three sneakers in rotation, though I do have a pile that I need to donate soon.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was cold here, but you beat me by a good 50 degrees!
Someone told me we were 30 degrees colder than the North Pole too and I was like, whhhhhhhhhat?! Crazy. SO glad this cold snap is breaking on Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a shoe limit, but I only have 2 pairs that I use. 4 more pairs that are not for running anymore, but just for outdoor work or other sports. One pair of tennis shoes. I thought I had a lot but you've got me beat. lol
ReplyDeleteoops! I forgot my trail running ones! add those to the list!
ReplyDeleteHa! With 4 runners in the house, I decided to gather all the 'dead' or too small shoes up to donate.....32 pairs of shoes fills 2, 30 gallon bags! The Vietnam Vets are going to LOVE me ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't have a shoe limit, but I should. I had a pair of shoes from a wear test program I didn't get many miles out of because they were a smidge to small. A coworker of mine is in need of a pair of running shoes & I offered to give her these today. I think I'm still about 10 pairs with 2 I really only wear.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a limit...but my wife has a limit for me :) Plus the fact that I'm still only running 2-3 miles a week puts a bit of a damper on the situation...
ReplyDeleteI don't have a shoe limit! I never heard of such a thing.... :)
ReplyDeleteI love how you randomly chose 9. I don't think I have more than 5 pairs at a time, but only wear one pair until it hits 300 miles, so I'm boring. The rest are yard shoes, etc.
ReplyDeleteWondering what you are wearing for pants on cold days. I wore my Sugoi Subzero tights today when the weather was -6 F with the wind chill and I was cold for several hours afterwards. I have worn a second pair of Sport Hill pants in the past.
ReplyDeleteFirst off let me pick my jaw up off the ground after seeing -24!!! Holy crap! It's single digits here and negative 15 wind chill and it's freaking cold. I cannot imagine how it is by you!!!
ReplyDelete5 shoes seems like a good amount, (coming from the person that has 5 in rotation and at least 5+ other pairs sitting around for sentimental value)
wtf - how is Alaska warmer than you guys? I don't understand weather! I don't have a shoe limit, but I don't really need one, since I generally just wear one pair till it needs replacing, then those shoes become work shoes, and the new pair becomes running shoes, and my I donate my previous work shoes at the shoe donation that my second job does. I do have two other lighter pairs for fun but that's about it. I'm boring!
ReplyDeleteI don't have that many pairs, only because I have a really hard time finding shoes that work well for me. Which Altra do you like? Are the Wave Sayonara still working for you? Have you thought about selling some of the pairs you've only worn a few times on ebay? My husband and I have sold many pairs on ebay quite quickly and easily.
