Running!

Well, I've been a bit absent lately.  In part because I injured my back and sitting was painful and in part because I didn't want to come here and whine about how I wasn't running.  I went for 2 weeks and didn't run a step. I am signed up for a half marathon in 6 days and am going to DNS it. That does not make me a happy girl, but it wouldn't be worth trying to run it either at this point.

I am getting better and did finally run 4 miles yesterday, and go for a ride on my horse. The latter may not have been the smartest move since it is spring and the horses are feeling peppy.

One of our cows had a set of twins on Friday. She cleaned them both off and nursed them both and seemed to be taking good care of both of them.  It seems the novelty of twins wore off in the night as when Saturday morning rolled around she only had one baby and the other was no where to be found. After some careful searching we found her sleeping in a coulee.  She is for now a bottle baby until we can hopefully graft her to another cow.

Since her twin was a bull calf she is most likely a free martin.  What is a free martin you ask? Wiki helps me out here:

A freemartin or free-martin (sometimes martin heifer) is an infertile female mammal with masculinized behavior and non-functioning ovaries.^[1] Genetically the animal is chimeric: Karyotyping of a sample of cells shows XX/XY chromosomes. The animal originates as a female (XX), but acquires the male (XY) component in utero by exchange of some cellular material from a male twin, via vascular connections between placentas: an example of microchimerism.^[2] Externally, the animal appears female, but various aspects of female reproductive development are altered due to acquisition of anti-Müllerian hormone from the male twin.^[3] Freemartinism is the normal outcome of mixed-sex twins in all cattle species that have been studied, and it also occurs occasionally in other mammals including sheep, goats and pigs.

and today I ran 5.5 miles!  Woot!  My back seemed a little stiff to start with, but by the end felt great! In fact, I finished the last mile at a 7:40 pace.

So I don't really have a plan from here except to take it easy for a bit until all the stiffness is gone.
Other than some yoga and a few bodyweight workouts, I really haven't done much the last two weeks, really hoping I am back in it!
